History

Treasure Chest of Sweetwater - We are a Weekly advertising / community newspaper in Central Florida. We began publication in the Summer of 1979. The owner purchased the rights to a one sheet, monthly advertising flyer called the Medicine Chest, which was distributed throughout the newly developed Sweetwater / Wekiva area by the owners of a small, neighborhood pharmacy.

The Pharmacy closed, leaving the community in need of a vehicle to advertise services provided by local tradespeople, retail businesses that were opening in the area and items for sale, (those "Treasures" that new residents brought to Florida from the land of attics and basements). We filled that need.

We bought a used printing press and other equipment, hired a graphic arts teacher to run the press on weekends and folded the finished product on a table folder in our garage.

We hired neighborhood children to deliver the paper - there was a dearth of money making enterprises for that age group since lawn service was big business. Twenty years later, some of the same families are still throwing the paper... and our production process has become somewhat more sophisticated! Our 5 employees are all neighborhood residents, three of whom have been with the Treasure Chest for over 12 years.

In 20 years, the Treasure Chest has grown from 4 to over 40 pages per issue. We have licensed two editions of the paper, under separate ownership, in Central Florida. The area has been good to us and we have tried to live up to our Credo of "Doing what we say we are going to do." We offer no guarantees on our advertising results, but the business growth of our advertisers and their continuing support of our paper is a testimony to a job well done.
